How to Pick Books for Dyslexics and Struggling Readers

Jan 15, 2024

As mentioned in the video, when making the jump to chapter books, try to use large print / library binding versions of a book to make the transition easier.

I try to use books that have been made into movies.  Clients then have a movie night when the book is completed.  This can often be a themed celebration and a party they invite friends to.

This is approach is rewarding because, for the first time, the young reader will be able to compare their expectations with the movie.  You can ask wonderful questions like, “Did the witch look like you thought she would look? Did you believe the magical kingdom was real.  Did Aslan act the way you though he would? Was the book better than the movie?”

Remember, when you conduct searches on Amazon, use “library binding” and “large print” interchangeably.  A book may not be listed as large print but be available in library binding, which means it will have larger print.

Here are some examples of the variety of books for young people that can be found in large print:

The Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe – It is listed as library binding but, as I mentioned in the video, that means the print is larger. Movie is a classic.

Wonder – Library binding – great story and was made into a movie.

Holes – Captivating and humorous story – movie is a cult classic.

 The Box Car Children

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone – As you know, all the Harry Potter books are movies.  What is even better, is that all the books are available in large print / library binding.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon

Want to know the variety of books that DK offers? Simply type in a topic and hit DK. For expamle,  DK level books on Legos.

DK makes several different series of books, the “level” books (1 – 5) are the least expensive and the ones you will start my program (if you join it) off with.  Make sure you have the word “level” in your Amazon search. Once your child is up and reading you can splurge on one of the Smithsonian series. These books are amazing and the artwork, photography and writing captures the hearts of young readers.  I have clients use these as a treat.

As I encourage in the video, go to Amazon, sit your struggling reader beside you, and let the Pick a Book Celebration begin.
